Nine month old Mariam was born in Malalai Hospital. She is there with her mother who has malaria.

Mariam is nine months old and very cute. No one could ignore her the day she was in the hospital. Dr. Atta, Malalai's pediatrician, left his work for a few minutes to hug and kiss Mariam. One wonders how this little girl survives the terrible heat in Kacha Abadi slum without electricity or cold water!

Mariam's mother is the one not feeling well today and the reason that they have come. Nine months ago Mariam was born in Malalai Hospital and the staff remembers that day. The nurse who helped her mother in the delivery room, calls Mariam her granddaughter.

Mariam's mother, who has malaria, had to bring Mariam along as she does not have anyone to take care of her at home. Mariam's father, like others, works in Mandaee from 4:00am to late at night and he still cannot afford enough food to feed his family properly.
