Lives of Afghan Refugees
Afghan refugees are among the largest and most forgotten groups of refugees in the world today. Most of them live in miserable conditions in makeshift refugee camps. The Afghan Women's Mission presents a shocking look inside Afghan refugee camps.

Jalozai and Akora refugee camps
Jan. 2001
[3 min 8 sec, 1.9mb]

Movie Clip Outline

- The video opens with a panoramic view of the Jalozai refugee camp showing hundreds of families living in tent-like homes.

- Jalozai Refugee Camp - Next, a group of women and men are seen describing their miseries to RAWA activists in Farsi language.

- Akora Khattak Refugee Camp - A RAWA member talking with some women from Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan. They talk in Pashtu. The old woman says, "My son was killed, a son who was like the seeds of a pomegranate. They looted us, they took everything from us."

A RAWA activist asks her where they find food. She answers,

"I have a small son who goes out all day long and brings back a little bit of food for us. I have orphans with me. We also spin cord from this fleece and get some money.

We are neither hungry nor full. We never have eaten enough. To show you my heart, it is broken, we are miserable."

- Akora Khattak Camp - People are lined up to get water.

- Akora Khattak Camp - An old father is living with his 5 children in a small tent. He shows a few pieces of bread and says, "This is what we have to eat. I beg for it from others and bring it to my children."

From our Guest Book

Dear AWM:

I am truly sorry that women and children in Afghanistan have to go through so much. My prayers are with all of them. Just remember that no matter what Allah(God) is with you and that he loves you. Also remember that when women from other countries read your stories and when they do your stories touch their hearts.
