February 22, 2001- Women waiting for blankets at Jalozai Refugee Camp, Pakistan

The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) distributed hundreds of blankets at Jalozai refugee camp on February 23 2001. The bitter cold at Jalozai camp has already killed many refugees. The Afghan Women's Mission has sent over $2,000 to RAWA enabling them to purchase blankets and other necessities for the refugees. Recent news reports describe the difficulty of distributing blankets in an open space in the camps because of the extreme conditions of the refugees. Distributors have been mobbed by desperate refugees on occasion. As a result, RAWA implemented a novel method of distribution: RAWA members visited refugees and distributed coupons for blankets to the most needy women in the camp. They then asked the women to redeem their coupons for blankets at a nearby location the following day.
